Vicar Says ‘No’ to Bingo Wedding

It’s no secret that bingo, land based and online, is wildly popular in the UK. The UK is the world’s largest online bingo market worth over a billion dollars a year and over 250 bingo websites service the UK market.  After the passage of a national smoking ban a few years ago the online bingo industry experienced a rapid increase in the number of players at online bingo websites. Chat rooms have been very popular with online players and in one instance a marriage proposal resulted from an online friendship in a bingo chat room. Online bingo sites have engaged in highly original marketing methods and recently a story about a wedding spo0nsored by an online bingo websites received international attention in the press.

The OnlineBingoClub wanted to be the first online bingo site to sponsor a wedding and offered the winning couple £5,000 ($7,779 USD) to be used for their wedding day in exchange for wearing the bingo site’s logo on their wedding outfits, invitations, menus and place settings. Matt Brown, 37, and Suzanne Latta, 28 were the lucky winners of the contest sponsored by the Online Bingo Club. This is not the first time a wedding has been used for marketing purposes. A few years ago the wedding of Anthea Turner and Grant Bovey ‘promoted’ Cadbury’s Snowflake chocolate bar. The happy couple’s nuptials ran into a snag after Vicar Rev Watts said that no0 logos would be permitted in his church. He also expressed his disapproval of gambling. Suzanne stated, “We were both absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the winners of the Bingo Bride competition. But our minister is not allowing any photos in the church during the ceremony, it is a sacred place and he wants no distractions, on speaking to him he didn’t approve of gambling being advertised in his church.”  There was no comment from Rev. Watts.

A representative from OnlineBingoClub, Rob Hutchison, said, “We are very disappointed that the vicar won’t allow our logos inside his church. We wanted to sponsor a wedding because we thought it would be great fun and a popular way to get our name out there. At the end of the day it is all just a bit of harmless fun and five grand would have helped Matt and Suzanne pay for their special day.” Some in the online bingo industry have criticized the contest but the OnlineBingoClub said that their competitors are just jealous they didn’t think of the promotion first.
