The Alabama Bingo War

The fight over electronic bingo in Alabama is sure to puzzle most UK bingo players. The fight includes the usual suspects, a right wing governor with close ties to the religious right. Alabama governor Riley seems to be waging a one man war against this innocuous form of gambling. Neither side seems willing to compromise and developers are determined to open electronic bingo halls throughout the state of Alabama and the governor is not backing down from his fight to eradicate electronic bingo from the state.

Governor is a conservative Republican with close ties to the religious right which fortunately does not have a large presence in the UK. Riley holds regular Bible studies in his office and tries to frame his policies in theological terms. Riley is waging an all out war against the bingo industry. In mid November Riley sent letters to gaming commissions in Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, Colorado, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arizona requesting that they inform gaming machine manufacturers to stop their ‘illegal’ activities in Alabama. Governor Riley is claiming that a recent Alabama Supreme Court decision made electronic bingo machines illegal.

In reality the Supreme Court judges made no such decision and set criteria the electronic bingo machines would have to meet to be legal. Despite Riley’s religiously motivated to bingo the developers are opening bingo halls throughout the state. The impending bingo fight is sure to cost Alabama taxpayers a pretty penny and many citizens view the whole fight as a waste of time and money. People on the other side of the Atlantic are sure to be puzzled by the opposition to bingo in Alabama.

In the UK land based and internet bingo is big business with ever growing revenues. Internet bingo websites are offering larger jackpots, bigger bingo bonuses and more promotions to players. The recent smoking ban and the government’s double taxation policies have sent many players to internet bingo sites. Given the popularity of bingo in the UK and Europe it is hard to understand such fierce opposition to such a popular pastime.
