More Internet Censorship !

Puritanism has raised its ugly head in the state of Washington. PR Web, one of the web’s most popular press release services has announced they will no longer publish press releases for internet bingo websites. The company, based in Washington State, received a cease and desist order banning press releases from internet bingo providers no matter where they are licensed or located. Some gaming experts say that up to 5 percent of PRWeb’s business will be affected by the ban.
Washington State has acquired a reputation for its opposition to online gaming including internet bingo while allowing all forms of land based gambling. Washington State has also taken the unbelievable measure of making online gambling a Class C felony with penalties usually reserved for more serious crimes. A statement released by PR Web stated, “PRWeb will no longer be publishing releases that promote or link to online gambling or related websites. This shift in editorial has been prompted by legal considerations and brings us in line with the stance that other notable organizations such as Google and Yahoo are currently taking with regard to promotion of online gambling in the U.S.”
In a notification to the popular poker site PokerSource PR Web explained that the Washington State Gambling Commission had sent a cease and desist order requiring that PR Web immediately stop publishing press releases from any gaming website including internet bingo sites. The ill advised action means that perfectly legal bingo websites are now prohibited from using the services of the popular press release distribution site.
The decision was not one PR Web made willingly. In a statement PRWeb’s East Coast Manager of Editorial Services Cari Lyle stated, “I apologize for the abrupt notice. This was not a decision that PRWeb willingly made. We received a Cease and Desist letter from the Washington State Online Gambling Commission requiring that we immediately halt the distribution of press releases promoting online gambling sites and content. As PRWeb is located in Washington State, we are required to be in compliance with Washington State laws.”
Chances are that the internet bingo industry will not be affected very much by this display of Puritanism and will continue to grow and offer players bigger bingo bonuses and other perks like a bingo sign up bonus or a bingo deposit bonus.
The move is bound to create a reaction in EU officials who will undoubtedly argue that the American action unfairly discriminates against European countries where internet bingo is perfectly legal. When will the US come to its senses regarding internet bingo and gaming in general?
