‘Cowchip Bingo’ Banned in New Jersey
Posted on October 18th, 2009
The game of bingo has many variations and has been adopted for many purposes. There are educational bingo games available for just about any subject and bingo has some very humorous variations such as ‘buzzword bingo’ and ‘Wal Mart bingo.’ On both sides of the Atlantic bingo has long been used as a fundraising tool by charitable groups, churches and veterans organizations. In the US a form of bingo called ‘cowchip bingo’ has become very popular.
Cowchip bingo requires a sizeable plot of land which is marked off into about 500 three foot numbered squares. The cow determines the winner by making a ‘deposit on one of the numbered squares. Chances on each square are sold for whatever price the organization running the game feels is appropriate. Sounds like a lot of harmless fun right?
A New Jersey church, the Middletown Reformed Church, planned the game as a fundraiser along with a family fun day with food and prizes. Just before the event Bill Potter, owner of the farm where the event was scheduled to take place received a call from the local clerk’s office saying the New Jersey Gaming Commission said cowpie bingo was illegal and they would not issue a permit for the event. The group sought assistance from state Senator Joseph Kyrillos, R-Monmouth the Attorney General’s office sent a letter stating that Cowpie Bingo does not fit the strict definition of a bingo game and that betting on farm animals is illegal. The church has sponsored the games for the past five years with no problems.
Despite the fact that New Jersey allows wide open gambling in Atlantic city somehow state officials thought it necessary to interfere in a church fundraiser offering a harmless game of ‘cowchip bingo. Many different groups use cowchip bingo as a fundraiser throughout the US including one law school. It is hard to understand the opposition to a harmless game of bingo for a good cause.
If playing bingo using various livestock is not your thing then internet bingo may be a great solution. While some states have weird laws and regulations the internet remains relatively free from puritanical oversight. Bingo fans are flocking to internet bingo sites and taking advantage of free bingo bonuses and all the other perks offered by internet bingo websites. Players can shop for the best bingo bonus available from the many websites offering bingo bonuses. Internet bingo is considerably cleaner to play than ‘cow chip bingo.’
